How can I make crystals from a referral?

How can I be friends with a referral so that when they ranks up, I get a crystal bonus? How do I know if I've earned the bonus? How does the process work? How do I get a referral by referral link and/or banner code thingy? Does the referral have to be a new account, or can the referral already be an active account in the game; like a friend?
